The Detective #10 – The Visitor

– Hi, Beatrice, are you ok? – Asked Peter, on the phone.

– Yes, I’m pretty fine! – She answered and continued – Listen, I was on the mall, now I’m going home, I was wondering if I could pass through…

– Of course you can, honey! I’m waiting for you!

Far from Peter’s house, Jane was at her house, organizing some papers; she was worried about the payment of her bills, when her cell phone rang. It was Karl, inviting her to go to Scott’s party on Friday:

– Oh, tomorrow, Karl? – Said Jane. – I’m not sure…

– Please, c’mon! It would be perfect for us to stop thinking about the last events! – Said Karl.

– Ok, and sorry to ask, but do we have to pay something? I’m running out of money! – Asked Jane.

– Oh, no… don’t worry about it! – Said Karl.

At Peter’s house, Robert was going to sleep while Peter was still at the living room, staring at the emerald green earrings on the table, when somebody knocked on the door. It was Beatrice:

– So, I had to talk to you, Peter… Well, Karl have just called me, inviting us to go to a party, at Scott’s place, what do you think?

– Scott? – Asked Peter.

– Yeah, that guy from engineering, friend of Joseph’s!

– Oh, ok, nice… It would be cool…

They both were silent. The place was silent. Beatrice noticed Peter was not comfortable and asked:

– What’s happening, Peter? Why have you missed the classes today? What did you do in the library, with Tina?

– Sorry, Bea, I’ve got some problems, and unfortunately you can’t help me… – Said Peter.

– But you can share them with me…

– No, I can’t! – Peter almost yelled. He was nervous and Beatrice perceived.

– Guess I see you tomorrow, then… – Said Beatrice, leaving.

On Friday, Tina woke up earlier the usual, she had missed the classes on Thursday and she did not want to do the same now, she said goodbye to Leah and left. Leah was listening to some German sentences on her CD player; she did not stop studying ever since she became blind. But Leah’s German lesson was suddenly interrupted a few minutes after Tina’s departure. Leah heard some noise coming from the kitchen and asked:

– Tina? Is that you?

There was no answer to Leah’s question. So she turned her CD player off and got her cell phone. Leah could hear some steps coming closer to her bedroom.

– Tina, please, is that you? – Leah asked again, another time without a response.

The steps ended, the person stopped, however, Leah was still able to listen to the person’s breathing. All of a sudden, some object fell down; the noise came from Tina’s bedroom. So Leah decided to call her sister, but for her disappointment, Tina’s cell phone rang somewhere else in the house – Tina had forgotten it at home. Then Leah did not think twice; she closed her door and locked herself into her bedroom. “At least here I’m safe” – she thought. At that moment, however, Leah heard some steps very close to her and she became terrified – “I’m locked here with the stranger!”

The sound of the steps became gradually more and more distant; Leah imagined the person would be close to the window. She confirmed her idea when she listened to the person opening the window and jumping out of the house, Leah ran and closed her window as fast as she could.
